Arena Sand

Arena sand is a cost-effective solution for horse footing. Several quarries offer natural occurrence inorganic materials like sand, etc. These could be used as they are or as mixtures to obtain uniform composition and particle size. However, there is one practical difficulty in using arena sand as perfect horse footing or arena surface material. The sand from one location is vastly different from any other location. The terms of supply will also vary widely, making it difficult to stick to one particular supplier.

Even then, a fair amount of ground rules can be formulated to obtain a standard thumb rule for the quality of the arena sand. The sand, gravel, stonedust or road base mix from the quarries can be classified according to particle sizes and the distribution of sizes. The particle distribution size is determined through the filtering of the sand with a standard set of sieves. These sieves have holes that increasingly become smaller. The finer materials get settled at the bottom and the larger particles remain on the upper sieves. Normally, sand ranging from 0.05 mm diameter (fine sand) to 2.00 mm diameter (coarse sand) is used as arena sand for horse footing.

Another point to remember while using arena sand for perfect horse footing is that the material brakes down into finer particles or gets compacted over a period of time due to the continuous impact of the horse hoof stamping over the arena sand. It would be necessary to top off with fresh arena sand on a regular basis, depending on the breakage level of the older material. Normally, most of the arena surfaces would be a composite of two materials or more. Topping off could be undertaken every alternate year, while complete replacement might be needed every 5 or 10 years.

However, shredded polyester materials are now mixed with the tread layers of silica sand or clay to obtain high stability and footing. It had been observed that springing comfort improves significantly by using shredded polyester material like Reitplatzhäcksel iR.
