Dust Free Arena Footing

Dust free arena footing had been the choice of all horse farms and training grounds the world over nowadays. It is common knowledge that dust seriously affects the health and vigor of the equine brethren. Apart from allergies and asthma, the horses also suffer from more serious ailments like Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) and silicosis, when they toil in a dusty atmosphere. The riders are also affected when the dust raised by the constant pounding of horse hooves is above critical limits. The injuries also multiply due to the erosion of the surface by the disintegration of the top layer, spreading out in the form of dust. Continuous watering is required to keep the dust under control. Any excess water that is not properly drained could make the surface slippery, endangering the sensitive legs of the horses.

Rubber footing had been a godsend for the horse breeders and trainers. The use of rubber mulch or crumb rubber was pioneered by Robert Malmgren, soil scientist at Colorado State University Equine Center in Fort Collins, Colorado. He advocated in the 1980?s the mixing of sand and crumb rubber to reduce the hardness of the equine arena and to increase the resiliency of the footing. The new mixture was also found be provide a relatively dust free arena footing, compared to arenas prepared with pure silica sand.

The technology was further augmented with the arrival of elastic riding mats manufactured totally from elastic PVC materials. The German hoser mat system containing innoReittex had proved to provide a virtually dust free arena footing even in farms and training centers having a large number of horses.
