Equine Arena Footing

The ideal equine arena footing should be level and it should also be firm. This would ensure a solid platform the equine to ride and train in. The base layer should anchor the top layer with a strong support. The surface should have maximum cushioning effect for absorbing the concussion of the footfall. At the same time, it should also have high traction to facilitate easy jumping or abrupt change of direction while training.

Remember that an equine arena footing that is too deep is going to strain the tendons, muscles, and ligaments of the equine partner?s legs, since all of them consist of soft tissues. If the surface of the equine arena footing is very hard, the jarring would make the horse to shorten its stride and the stress and the strain on the joints would also be higher. A slippery surface would not only increase the chances of injuries but would also slow down the horse because of the apprehension of slipping. An uneven equine arena footing would hinder the consistent riding and training of the horse and would also raise the likelihood of injury.

For serious horse riding and training purposes like dressage and jumping, the preparation of the equine arena footing would involve the spending of more time and money. Using a combination of ˝ inch crumb rubber and 1˝ to 2 inches silica sand is ideal for dressage arena footing. For jumping arena footing, the ratio of crumb rubber and sand should be 1 inch to 1˝ inches. This would definitely increase the cost of creating the equine arena footing. An 80 by 160 foot ring might cost an extra $3000 or more if the rubber-silica sand combination is used. However, the higher cost is definitely justifiable when you consider the negligible risk in injuries and the lower maintenance and replacement costs.
