Riding Arena Surfaces

For long, horsemen had been lamenting about the serious injuries suffered by the horses due to inappropriate and inadequate riding arena surfaces. Silica sand had been the only option for several centuries. However, perfect riding conditions had not been possible with silica sand riding arena surfaces. Fortunately, the advances in scientific research in this field had contributed to some very useful developments to protect the legs of the horses from strains and injuries and to improve their performance levels. One of the pioneers in this modern research work had been Robert Malmgren. He was working as a soil scientist in Fort Collins, Colorado, with the Colorado State University Equine Center in the 1980s. He was the one who introduced the usage of crumb rubber to reduce the hardness of the riding arena surface. His research confirmed that the mixing of crumb rubber with the sand increased the resiliency of the surface to a great extent. He also proved that the addition of the crumb rubber resulted in reducing the dust to a great extent.

Pure silica sand surfaces break down must faster due to the continuous pounding action of the horses? hooves. Natural forces like rain, wind, the variations of summer and winter, etc. also play their part in breaking down the sand. The fine broken down sand spreads as dust particles when the horses ride on them. Dust causes not only allergies and asthma but also lead to ailments like Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) and silicosis. COPD is generally associated with cigarette smoking for a long period but it had been observed in horses also that ride and train for long in dusty conditions. Watering needs also increase enormously to keep down the dust.

Crumb rubber is the best answer for these problems, because it is not easily biodegradable. The life of crumb rubber is estimated as 50 years. Crumb rubber is non-toxic. It reduces the amount of watering requirements. As such, the InnoReittex, a readymade mixture of shredded polyester and silica sand, is the ideal solution for high quality riding arena surfaces.
