Sand Arena

Despite the advancements in technologies that had brought in rubber mulch and polyester surfaces for the preparation of equine arena footing surfaces, the sand arena is still holding sway over the farm owners, horse breeders and equestrian trainers. The main reason for this is the ease of laying out the horse footing surface. The cost of the sand arena is much lower than that of the rubber and synthetic surfaces. The availability of sand locally makes it easier to obtain it faster and cheaper. The thickness of the various layers could be easily controlled. In the same compound, different types of surfaces could be prepared in separate patches for different applications like galloping, jumping, jogging, dressage, etc. This provides a high variety and flexibility in the horse arena design at virtually the same cost. The rubber and synthetic surfaces would never be able to offer this type of flexible preparation of mixed surfaces in one compound as easily sand arenas could. Topping off of the layers from time to time with fresh sand is also much simpler with the availability of sand immediately on demand.

However, the preparation of sand arena does require a fair amount of planning in the initial stages. The sub soil had to be analyzed and then prepared according to the norms laid down for sand arena footings. Then the top layer sand arena had to be laid out. Adequate care should be taken to include the best possible drainage system, so that there is no stagnation of water even during an unusually heavy monsoon. There should be provision for proper watering in summer, so that the dust generated by the pounding of the horses? legs is immediately allowed to settle down and mix with the surface. Single sized sand particles are known to retain moisture and at the same time drain excess water faster. The grain size of the silica sand used in the sand arena should be exact and tailor made to suit the local conditions.
